Emergency Preparedness for Providers

Aug 01, 2023

There are many situations that can be classified as emergencies such as fire, severe weather situations, and incidents with people. Being prepared for situations like these is crucial for responding effectively.

For all emergency situations, policies and provisions must be outlined with instructions for the appropriate manner that they affect employees and patients. Employees must be trained to understand the emergency preparedness policies upon initial hiring and there is to be an annual review of the policy for all employees. The emergency plan should also describe access to 911 services in the event emergency care is needed for employees, patients, or other personnel.

Weather, Fire Safety, and Emergency Power Systems for Employees

Severe weather crisis situations will be outlined for each facility in regard to:

  • Severe weather planning and precautions should be location specific and plan for the typical types of severe weather experienced in the area.
  • A system for contacting employees in the event of severe weather.
  • Mobilization of needed resources.
  • Time frame for initiation of actions based of various stages of weather. The stages will be issued by the National Weather Service typically as watches, warnings, etc.

Policies and procedures must be created to describe to employees how to react in the event of a fire.

  • Fire alarm systems. The alarm system must comply with local building codes. The alarm system must be tested to manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Sprinkler systems must be included in each facility if required by local building codes.
  • Exit routes must be identified throughout each facility. Escape routes should be mapped within each room of the facility.
  • An emergency communication system should be established and each employee should understand the system.
  • Fire and smoke alarms are maintained at the facility. They are checked, tested, and maintained on a regular basis as outlined by the manufacturer.
  • Fire drills are conducted at least annually. Performance is to be evaluated by management.

Power outage policies will be outlined for each facility in regards to:

  • A system for contacting employees concerning the power outage
  • A system of backup power that includes responsibilities
  • Illumination of exit routes
  • Mobilization of resources
